CBD BASICS
New to CBD? Confused about the difference between hemp and marijuana? Or, in general, just curious to learn more? Don't worry. We've compiled the most commonly asked questions all in one page in a simplified way to save you time from going to different websites to learn more.
What is CBD?
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of 113 compounds called “cannabinoids” found in the cannabis sativa L. plant. Although discovered in 1940, we’re only recently learning about CBD’s many possible benefits.
No, you won’t get high from smoking CBD. Cannabidiol doesn’t cause intoxication, regardless of how you consume it.
The benefits of CBD are not fully understood at this moment, despite many anecdotal reports and preliminary studies. Based on our currently limited information, CBD may assist with sleep cycles and provide ease from tension and other therapeutic applications. It's important to note that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved CBD to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
There is no difference between hemp and marijuana. Both refer to the cannabis sativa L. plant species, part of the larger cannabis genus. “Hemp” simply refers to cannabis with less than 0.3% THC, while “marijuana” contains over 0.3% THC.
There are many differences between CBD and THC. The main difference is that CBD is non-intoxicating, while THC will affect things like coordination and memory.
Smoking hemp flower is very different from using CBD oil. Inhalation allows for virtually instant effects, while oil can take at least 30 to 45 minutes before effects begin. However, smoked CBD wears off within two or three hours while oil can last four to eight hours.
The difference between smoking hemp flowers and CBD vapes is that hemp flower is dried plant matter consumed in a joint, pipe, bong, or dry herb vaporizer. CBD vapes, on the other hand, contain highly concentrated oil vaporized inside a mechanical cartridge.
Vapes are also highly concentrated, so a few puffs will deliver the same amount of CBD as a full joint or similar method.
Hemp contains many other compounds than just CBD or THC. Terpenes - oily compounds throughout the plant kingdom - give each strain its unique aroma and also impact the overall effects. There are also 113 known cannabinoids beyond CBD or THC, many of which exist to varying degrees in different hemp strains.
Cannabinoids are plant compounds that appear exclusively in cannabis sativa L. Research is ongoing, but experts believe many have therapeutic or recreational properties. Aside from CBD and THC, some key examples appearing in hemp products include:
CBG (cannabigerol)
CBN (cannabinol)
CBC (cannabichromene)
Terpenes are oily compounds found in every plant species. Aside from providing a specific taste or smell, terpenes may offer a range of benefits to enhance the quality and potency of your hemp product.
The Entourage Effect is a synergistic relationship between cannabinoids and terpenes. The compounds work together, enhance each other’s therapeutic effects.
No. None of Bonata's products come from “marijuana,” which is federally illegal.
Yes, THC could show up on drug tests if you smoke hemp flower. Although small, the amount of THC in whole hemp flower may be enough to trigger a positive test, especially if you consume it regularly.
CBD shatter (or shatter in general) is a powerful concentrate made mostly from the resins and trichomes (“crystal”) of cannabis flower. Shatter gets its name from the glass-like consistency, which is easy to break.
Like shatter, CBD crumble is extracted using the same process as other concentrates. However, this product has a dry or crumbly consistency (hence the name).
CBD works through different receptor pathways in the body, binding, blocking, or altering their function.
Smoking CBD reportedly can be very relaxing. Other reported effects include appetite changes, fatigue, mood improvement, and more. However, these aren’t fully backed by medical science and vary from person to person.
Yes, CBD can have side effects. Fortunately, they’re rare, mild, and usually temporary. These include:
Lethargy
Nausea
Headache
Diarrhea
Research into CBD’s effects on epilepsy found that CBD can interact with other medications. If you use any prescriptions, don’t try CBD without speaking to a doctor.
Yes, you can drive or operate heavy machinery after consuming CBD, as it doesn’t make you “high.”
There’s no official legal age where you’re allowed to smoke CBD. However, vendors typically set the minimum at 21 years, reflecting the federal minimum drinking age.
